Due to its central location, the Federal Republic of Germany shares borders with more European countries than any other country on the continent. Its neighbours are Denmark in the north, Poland and the Czech Republic in the east, Austria and Switzerland in the south, France and Luxembourg in the southwest and Belgium and the Netherlands in the northwest.

Germany is made up of sixteen states and with a population of 82 million people, it has the largest population among the EU member states.


Germany is the world’s third largest economy, the world’s largest exporter of goods (soon to be overtaken by China), and the world’s second largest importer.

Germany is a founding member of the European Union, a member state of the United Nations, NATO, the G8 and the G4 nations.
