PG25 Transcript – Putting in your 2c worth
As in English, there are loads of ways to ask someone for their opinion. If Lisa wanted to know my feelings about something, she might ask: “Was ist deine Meinung dazu?” oder “Was ist deine Ansicht?” oder “Was denkst du darüber?“ oder “Was hältst du davon?“She could also refer directly to the issue or problem: “Was sagst du zum Treibhausgasproblem?” oder “Was sagst du zum Problem der Umweltverschmutzung?”
Another good way of asking essentially the same thing is: “Welche Einstellung hast du zum neuen Rauchergesetz” oder “ Was ist deine Einstellung zum Thema Abtreibung?”
This means, “What is your attitude towards…” or “What is your position on…” this is perfect for asking folks what they think about the smoking ban in Germany for example or heavily debated issues like abortion.
As with asking opinions, there are also tonnes of ways to express your opinions so you can chop and change according to your mood, inclination and preference. For example, you could say, “Meiner Meinung nach…”, “Ich bin der Meinung / Ansicht, dass…” or if you want to sound really with it you could use “Nach meiner Einschätzung…”. Of course the following will also do the trick nicely: “Ich finde…”, “Ich meine…” oder “Ich denke…”.
German politicians are as talented as any at avoiding the question but like most good politicians, they also love giving their opinions and are big fans of phrases like: “im Grunde”, “im Grunde genommen”, “grundsätzlich” und “im Prinzip” oder “prinzipiell”, which really mean nothing more than “basically” or “in principle”.
Other expressions that they tend to like are “in der Regel” (as a rule) oder “im Allgemeinen” (in general). When I first arrived in Germany I was always impressed to hear how often old Gerhard Schröder was firmly convinced about party policy. He would always say: “Ich bin fest davon überzeugt“. If you’ve watched the German news, I’m sure you’ve heard all these words really often. In fact ,“Ich bin fest davon überzeugt!“
While you do want to be as articulate and eloquent as a politician, you don’t want to ramble on like one. I expect you’ll want to get to the point and down to business so memorize these expressions: „kurz gesagt“, „kurz und gut“ und „kurzum“ which mean, „in brief“ and „in a nutshell“.
Lastly, there will be times when you want to agree with someone’s opinion like when Lisa says: „Tyler ich finde man sollte Sonntags eigentlich nicht arbeiten.“ I could agree by saying: „Babe, das sehe ich ganz genauso“ or „Ich bin da ganz deiner Meinung....“

Mediengruppe Telekommanda -- Bild dir deine Meinung
Bild dir deine Meinung
