Learn German podcast PG21 - Hitched
Today’s podcast teaches common German marriage vocabulary and phrases. Especially in the age of community sites like Facebook it seems like every other week I hear of an engagement, wedding or birth. I figure if you can’t escape it, you might as well be able to talk about - in German of course. Learn what the German expressions “unter die Haube” and my personal favourite “einen Braten in der Röhre” mean. As well as wise words about the best way to keep a woman. (I just know this will come back to bite me!)
to be hitched (lit. under the bonnet)

PG21 – Hitched
Tyler: No, you’ve got to be kidding me! Not another engagement. When are they planning to get married?
Tyler: True, they’re dropping like flies now. Oh well, on the bright side at least there’s another bachelor party to look forward to – that should be fun.
Tyler: I imagine best man will be one of Stefan’s old school buddies. So what do you think, do you think Birgit’s got a bun in the oven?
Tyler: And, are you going to hold onto the bridal bouquet this time and not let another broody girl snatch it out of your hands like the last time? I have to say, after such a classy catch I was disappointed to see how willing you were to give it up. I’d hoped to see more of a cat fight.
Tyler: That’s because you know all too well the advice that my father gave me. He always said, „Tyler, the best way to keep a woman, is barefoot and pregnant!“

Lyrics - Heirate Mich by Rammstein
Heirate mich
Mit meinen Händen grab ich tief
zu finden was ich so vermisst
und als der Mond im schönsten Kleid
hab deinen kalten Mund geküsst
Ich nehm dich zärtlich in den Arm
doch deine Haut reißt wie Papier
und Teile fallen von dir ab
zum zweitenmal entkommst du mir
Heirate mich
Unofficial Translation by Jeremy Williams.
People see him creeping around the church
he has been alone for a year
The sadness took away all his senses
he sleeps every night by her grave
There, by the bells sleeps a stone
and I alone can read it
and on the fence, the red rooster
who was your heart at that time
The fear skewered on this fence
I now go digging every night
to see what's left
of the face that smiled for me
There by the bells I spend the night
there between snails, a lonely animal
during the day I run after the night
you escape me for the second time
Marry me
With my hands I dig deep
to find what I missed so much
and as the moon was in its most beautiful dress
I kissed your cold mouth
I take you tenderly by the arm
but your skin rips like paper
and parts are falling off of you
you escape me for the second time
Marry me
So I take what's left
the night is hot and we are naked
cursedly the rooster greets the morning
I hacked off his head
