Learn German podcast PG4 - Student Days: Testing Times
Do you know the German translation for: "cribbing" or "skipping class"? We've all had to hit the books at some stage. Some of us didn't learn as hard as we should have and just scraped our exams by the skin of our teeth, while the 'know-it-alls' brown-nosed the teachers and aced the courses. For those of you who cribbed, skipped and skived during student days, today's podcast and German slang is especially for you and the learn German online quizzes will help you reinforce the lesson's material.

PG4 Transcript – Student days Part 1
I am finally a university student and I don’t have to hit the school books anymore. The best thing about university life, is that you finally move out of your parent’s shack and get your own digs. My high school diploma I just scraped by the skin of my teeth. In the last few years I often only past by cribbing from my neighbour’s work. In most exams I had a crib sheet with me and I fudged it whenever I could.
(2_English): Karl, one of my best school friends wasn’t such a cheat like me. But he also wasn’t one of these bootlickers who buttered up the teachers. You have to give credit where it’s due, he really has plenty up top! But like everywhere, we also had quite a few smart alecks, who acted as if they knew all the answers.

PG4 Transcript – Student days Part 2
I have to admit, that I often skipped class. Karl was also often conspicuous by his absence. But he could afford to cut the odd lesson. Now for my university studies, I have resolved to learn all the new material thoroughly from the very beginning. My aim in
university is to score higher in all my subjects. I tackled this objective straight away and would you believe it: I am now my maths Prof’s student assistant!
(4_English): I have recently become a lot more ambitious. Now I would hate to fail any exams and it would be awful for me if I had to drop out of Uni. Today I find it difficult to understand why so many people ditch their studies. Particularly in today’s world
where it is very important to graduate with reasonably good marks. I hope it works out!

Jack's Bonus Mystery Box
You win some
you lose some.
Fun discovery or worthless crap?
- you decide!
The most popular album and single of Falco's career was "Rock Me Amadeus" which became a worldwide hit in 1986 reaching #1 in the U.S. and the UK. The song remained in the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks and his album, Falco 3, fittingly peaked at the number three position on the Billboard album charts. Unheard of at the time for a white performer, much less a European one, the Austrian rapper's single climbed to the upper reaches of the Billboard Top R&B Singles Chart (only a few years earlier called the "Black Singles" chart), peaking at number 6. It would be two more years before a white artist, George Michael, would momentarily break the reverse-colour barrier to top that chart.
Today's theme song is a song from Falco's 1982 album Einzelhaft called "Nie mehr Schule". I've included the song lyrics and as a bonus for those looking for a little taste of nostalgia here is a link to the original and classic version of the Rock Me Amadeus video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8j-tJTT6CLQ . Enjoy!
Nie Mehr Schule
Es steht geschrieben
Und 'was Wahres hat es schon
Ja, der Dumme lebt sich tot,
Nur mit Hirn kommst du davon! Ja, ja!
Willst Du Vaters Lob,
Sein Auto, dazu Sprit,
Dann mach in der Schule mit
z.B.:
Gretchen Grün
War im Aufriß immer kühn,
Und der Oberstudienrat
Hatte schnell den Rat parat
Und sagte:
"Willst Du tüchtig sein
Und Noten ohne Shit,
Nur diese Übung hält Dich fit!"
Und seinen Rechenschieber hat er mit.
Nein danke!
Nie mehr Schule,
Keine Schule mehr!
Denn ihr Bart,
Herr Studienrat,
Ist mir doch zu wenig smart!
Nein danke!
Nie mehr Schule,
Keine Schule mehr!
Denn der Umstand ist bekannt:
Zuviel Schule macht Dich krank!
Montag früh,
Jonas Maier hat die Müh'
Zu erkennen, daß die Pflicht
In sein Leben tritt und spricht:
"Du hast die Wahl,
willst Du segen ohne Qual:
Man hört:
Nein danke,
Nie mehr Schule,
Keine Schule mehr!
Denn unser Leben, in der Tat,
Ist auch mit Eurem Zeugnis hart. Ja, ja!
Und Privat,
Frau Studienrat,
Sind sie doppelt so apart! Ja, ja!
Nein danke,
Nie mehr Schule,
Keine Schule mehr!
